Defiance Clinic Welcomes New Physicians

• In an expansion of service, Defiance Clinic has recruited a new full-time physician Raj Gunda, M.D., to provide both Oncology and Hematology services, and Raza Hashmi, M.D., has joined the rotation of visiting Cardiologists.

  
  

  “We are most fortunate to have an experienced, full-time physician who is qualified to treat not only cancer but also blood disorders such as hemophilia and anemia,” said Chad L. Peter, Clinic president and chief executive officer. “Hematology is a new service for us and having it available here will be a convenience for patients.”

  
  

  In addition to board certification in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, Dr. Gunda also has more than 20 years of experience. She comes to the Clinic from Findlay where she has practiced since 1988.

  
  

  “My focus is on providing a good quality, state-of-the-art care with compassion and understanding for the needs of patients and their families,” Dr. Gunda said.

  
  

  She earned her medical degree in India, served internship and residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, MI and then completed a three fellowship in Oncology and Hematology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. She also served for one year as a staff physician in the Hematology Department at Henry Ford Hospital.

  
  

  Dr. Hashmi moved from Defiance to Toledo in 2006 when he joined Toledo Cardiology Consultants, Inc., the physician group that now provides cardiac services at the Clinic and Mercy Hospital of Defiance. Other Toledo Cardiology physicians who also come to Defiance on a regular rotation are Mohammed Alkhateeb, M.D., Ameer Kabour, M.D., Tarif Kanaan, M.D., and Thomas Welch, M.D.

  
  

  “Dr. Hashmi knows the people and the community and is an excellent addition to the Cardiology rotation at the Clinic,” said Chad L. Peter, Clinic president and CEO. “We are fortunate to have this talented group of cardiologists seeing patients for testing and follow-up right here in Defiance.”

  
  

  William A. Sutton, administrator of Mercy/Defiance, said, “We’re happy to have Dr. Hashmi as part of our Cardiology team. He and his colleagues are also on staff at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo and give our patients ready access to St. V’s Regional Heart and Vascular Center. By working together, the team of cardiologists, the Clinic, Mercy/Defiance and St. V’s are able to provide the gamut of Cardiology services from diagnostic testing to robotic heart surgery.”

  
  

  Dr. Hashmi is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. He received his medical education in Pakistan. Dr. Hashmi completed residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Connecticut and a three-year fellowship in cardiology at Winthrop University Hospital through the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
